You may have recently seen a stylistic trailer on BBC TV for their “History of the World in 100 Objects” initiative - the one with a man jumping over a bull…

Anyway, the supporting website went live a couple of days ago, and they’d done enough to compel me to take a visit.

We talk a lot about the importance of facilitating the creation, recommendation, sharing and filtering of digital assets here at RMM - and the Beeb has produced what looks like a great example of this (a few techical teething problems aside).  In a nutshell the site provides each audience (individuals or museums) with the opportunity to upload an object that means something to them, and add a whole heap of categorisations (when, where, colour, what it means etc).  The result - a rather funky “through the ages” representation of user generating images and stories which is strangely addictive, plus badges and widges galore to share.

I’m intrigued to see how the contributions develop - and whether my suggestion of the Brian Clough statue is accepted by the online curator! Will this lead to the world’s greatest online museum…?
