“When it changed” - or just an artefact?

Alexa Chart for Popular Web 2 properties

See that sudden leap in reach around April 2006. Was that when web 2.0 happened? Or does it reflect a change in Alexa’s processes? I’m not a massive user of Alexa’s stats (for a variety of reasons), so it’s only now that I’ve noticed.

Others beat me to it, asking “Did the world get geekier around April 20th.”

Weirdly, the answer appears to be that - on April 20th last year, a whole load of Digg users downloaded the Alexa toolbar, radically changing Alexa’s demographic from then on.

For those of you with an old media frame of reference, it’s like the BARB panel was suddenly invaded by millions of rabid Doctor Who fans.

Surely more like when “enthusiastic” (the preferred term, I believe) Doctor Who fans voted en masse to ensure that their (oh, OK, our) beloved show was ranked the best show ever aired on the BBC in the corporation’s 75th anniversary celebrations?
