Another post in an ongoing if somewhat casual campaign to demonstrate that there’s nothing new in the world – its all just a bit lot faster and now has acronyms. This post is prompted by news on the radio this morning that the Christmas classic ‘Oh Come All Ye Faithful’ is in fact not a call to adore the child saviour but in fact a rallying cry word of mouth campaign for the Jacobite cause. In the same way that games designers leave easter eggs hidden inside their creations for the cognoscenti to discover there is apparently a political message hidden inside the Latin version of the song. According to Professor Bennett Zon, head of music at Durham University, ”The meaning of the Christmas carol is clear: ‘Come and Behold Him, Born the King of Angels’ really means, ‘Come and Behold Him, Born the King of the English’ – Bonnie Prince Charlie!” A brief history of gaming easter eggs can be found here.
