What’s preventing businesses from using social media?

We’ve been working with the folks over at Capgemini since 2007, supporting their use of digital technologies.  It therefore made perfect sense that RMM’s very own Iain was one of the first to contribute to Capgemini’s Debate TV initiative. This platform encourages the sharing of knowledge, and encouragement of debate through the medium of video.

In the clip below, Iain chats with Capgemini NL’s Rick Mans on what’s preventing businesses from using social media.

As we regularly discuss in the RMM office, it’s not so much a case of organisations doing nothing, but often the fact they’re using social technologies:

  • because they think they should be (everyone else is – let’s not get left behind here!)
  • they’re generally curious to see what happens (let’s give it a try)

This feels like the ‘awareness and understanding’ stage of what could be described as a social media implementation lifecycle. As we see in the United States, where the use of social technologies is generally more advanced (than Europe), organisations are focusing on how to integrate these technologies across their operation (customer service, R&D etc), as opposed to being seen as a  marketing ‘bolt on’.

Funnily enough the Debate TV initiative is all about ‘debate’ … so why not share your thoughts on ‘what’s preventing businesses from using social media’ with us?
