Handbags at Dawn

Oo-er, Missus, Ebay have pulled all their advertising from Google.

Ebay’s decision came in response to Larry Paige wearing the same dress as Meg Whitman to the Prom Google hosting a promotional party for their credit card processing system at the same time as Ebay’s annual merchant’s shin-dig. At long last, is there no decency in Silicon Valley, I ask you? (OK, so the parties were in Boston, but my moral outrage withstands your urban pedantry, gentle reader). According to a girl who like totally knows the head cheerleader industry analysts, the scheduling clash was a deliberate attempt on Google’s part to try to steal market share from Ebay.

Ebay’s spokesman, the fabulously monickered Hani Durzy, said that “We don’t view that kind of activity as an appropriate activity for one partner to do to another”. Harrumph. Rumours that he then poured himself another mint julep and collapsed onto the chez lounge were unconfirmed at the time of posting.

Google tearfully cancelled their event, stating on their blog that “Tomorrow is another day” “We agreed it was better not to hold this event during the eBay Live conference”.

New media guru Tim O’Reilly was unavailable for comment, but witnesses report hearing cries of “The children! Won’t somebody please think of the children!” when he was informed of the spat.

Dan is responsible for translating social media research into the analytic and conceptual frameworks which underpin the team’s product and service development. He is particularly interested in how social media has changed the ways in which people exchange information within networks, and the impact that these changes have had on traditionally top-down information systems, such as those prevalent within the health, education and NGO sectors, where he leads RMM’s activities.

Dan’s focus upon health and education stems from his background in academia: He has a PhD in History and, as well as being Head of Research at RMM, he is a member of faculty at the Berman Institute of Bioethics at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, USA. He has published and lectured widely on the ethics of social media use within healthcare systems, and is involved in the application of social media in medical education at Johns Hopkins hospital.

Dan likes cooking, martinis, and irony. Frequently at the same time.
