I’ve been meaning to put this on the blog for a while now. Its a great example of how a brief and a fixed amount of time can really focus the mind and turn out a peice of media ripe for social media dissemination.
After the jump read the story behind this short film (filmed by yours truly).
Back when I was a student at Warwick University (not 7 months ago…) I entered a film making contest with a couple of friends called Warwick Shootout. Its the only one of its kind in the country (and in the world I believe) wherein students and academics (both from Warwick and other universities around the world):
Make a film up to 4 minutes long in just 24 hours, including campus people, places and objects from a brief revealed only 1 hour before filming
As such everything from devising, scripting, blocking and, of course, filming has to take place in the allotted 24 hours – one cannot plan any aspect of the film before the brief is released. Moreover all editing has to be done ‘in-camera’ meaning the film must be filmed chronologically to boot.
It was absolutely top fun, kept me and my pals out of mischief for 24 hours and resulted in us winning Best Performance, Best Direction and Best Film. Needless to say we were distinctly chuffed!
Just goes to show that with a focussed mind and a good brief (oh and some thoroughly creative minds) you can turn around content pretty quickly.
You’re quite right. Nothing like a tiny timeframe to elicit energetic ideas. But, just on the content, reminds me of Nicholson Baker’s The Fermata. You should read it.
Thanks Ellie; I certainly will check out The Fermata. In truth our inspiration was in no small part Bernard’s Watch (great ITV kids TV show from the 90s).
A tiny timeframe does help elicit energetic ideas but I’d suggest that equally important in a short time frame is a good brief (or at least brief to work from). With limited time you need if not a limited scope than certainly a focussed scope else the creativity can’t be channelled effectively. But hey, thats just me!
